Estimated 3.3 Million Kindles Shipped In 2009.

By Best-eReaders, April 15, 2010

Displaysearch has revealed some very interesting figures regarding e-paper device shipments in 2009.

According to their numbers, more than 5 million e-paper units were shipped in 2009. It is not clear as what is considered an e-paper device but we assume it is directed towards different ereading devices. The Amzon Kindle has a 66% ereader market share, ie: 3.3 million Kindle units shipped.

These numbers reflect an huge increase compared to 2008. In this year only 950,000 e-paper devices were shipped. That’s a 417% increase.

Hiroshi Hayase, DisplaySearch director of small- to medium-size displays was quoted saying:

“Seeing this growth for a new application, especially in the second half of last year, is a vote of confidence from consumers who seem to have embraced e-books, Momentum from e-book popularity last year combined with new, larger-size products hitting the market right now means that this trend will continue, so we will see large shipment volume increases in the first half of 2010.”
