As the Kindle 3 is currently only a speculation, we might be surprised and see it released later this year, just in time for the holiday season.
There’s no doubt the Kindle 2 is not a bad device at all, and obviously the best selling one. But some changes has to be made in order to make it almost perfect.

Here are my thoughts:
A Bigger Screen Size
Altough the Kindle DX offers a 9.7″ screen, I do think the Kindle 3 should feature a larger screen than the current 6″. How about a 7″ one? With the upcoming Kindle Application store the Kindle 3 will have to provide more features than just book reading. Games, Magazines and internet browsing will look much better on a 7″ screen. Amazon also have to remember the new Apple iPad will be a serious competitor and an answer should be found. Fast.
Color Screen
Technology is moving fast. And altough the E-Ink technology is currently the best way to read books, I have no doubt other technology companies will know how to take the advatages of this technology, and agregate it with the unique features of color screens. Start up companies like Mirasol and Pixel QI are already working on color screens that will perfectly fit eReaders. It’s most likely that the Kindle 3 will feature a color screen.
Multi Touch Screen
Apple revolutionized the way we use cellphones with the iPhone. One of the coolest features is the Multi Touch Screen that will also be featured on the iPad. Amazon has to follow. Imagine turning pages by sliding your finger on the screen, Zooming in and out on the text and adding notes next to your favorite paragraph. With the current development of screen technology, this feature is about to become mandatory on any mobile device released to the market.
Accessing the Internet
The Kindle 2 currently offers a wireless download of books via the Kindle store, but a full acces to the web is still not possible. With more hot spots added around the world every second, a full Wi-Fi access means more people buying the Kindle.
Share Your Books With Friends
Probably the coolest feature Amazon can add to the Kindle 3. B&N tried doing it with the Nook but gave up rather fast. People are pretty tired of buying DRM protected books. It’s time for books to become social. It will happen sooner or later, and Amazon should climb the wagon before it’s too late.

Although a color screen would be nice for a few things (such as comics and photos), most books are just black and white text, so even if it was offered, I’m not sure I’d be willing to pay extra for it.
I don’t want a touch screen – there would be tons of fingerprints on what I’m trying to read.
Also, you are right that wi-fi would be helpful, but I don’t know what you mean when you say “full access to the web is still not possible.” Sure it is. What do you mean? I can surf the web all I want with 3G.
Finally, you CAN share books with friends – all you have to do is temporarily register them to your account, and give them the book. The Nook’s lending is very very restrictive – you can only lend a book ONCE, to ONE friend, for only 14 days.
Hi Cathy
What I mean in “full access to the web” is browsing sites in color taking advantage of all the cool stuff the web offers. It’s hard to enjoy browsing in black and white and with no support of Flash.
