While RCA introduced their REB1100 way back when in 2001, this basic electronic reader maintains a surprising number of fans. Many of those who made their original purchase when this product was released are still going strong after several years of use. In this day and age of instantly outdated technology, it’s nice to see electronics still going strong years later.

Features
The RCA REB1100 offers the basics in eReaders with a 5.5 inch display screen and just 8 MB of built in storage. The storage is, however, expandable up to 128 MB, but nowhere near its more modern counterparts of 512 MB built in storage.
While the battery is rechargeable and is said to offer up to 30 hours on a single charge, the use of the backlight will significantly reduce this time to approximately 12-15 hours.
The RCA REB does offer standard what is now optional and extra with the more modern electronic readers, as it comes with a stylus, power adapter, phone cord, USB cable and slip case.
Bottom Line
While many are looking for sleek, techie electronic readers with all the bells and whistles, eBook purists who would just like the basics for reading on the run may find the RCA REB has just what they need.

Pros
It’s hard to imagine someone not having a computer in this day and age, but those people do exist and the RCA eBook offers a built in modem to allow purchases via a telephone line. While many of the newer eReaders have taken away the backlight and offered it as an option within an accessory case, the RCA continues to have the built in backlight feature.
While the original RCA software did not allow format conversions, a free download of the Gemstar-Rocket Reader library program can perform conversions.

Cons
What the RCA does not offer is the new e-ink technology that is available on the latest releases of electronic readers. The e-ink offers more clarity and simulates the page of a book. The RCA REB only offers an LCD screen, but it is nearly six times the screen resolution of a typical handheld personal digital assistant.
The battery charge is woefully short, only 12-15 hours when using the built in backlight. But the RCA REB does include an A/C charger, something that more modern units are calling an optional accessory, as they can charge via USB port.
